Chris is a landscape photographer well-known for his breathtaking captures of the Canadian Rockies, the Kootenay region of British Columbia, and the stunning landscapes of Aotearoa New Zealand. His portfolio includes majestic mountain vistas, tranquil lakes, ethereal nightscapes, and mesmerising auroras, showcasing the ever-changing beauty of the natural world. Recently, Chris has embarked upon creative experimentation with Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) photography, adding an abstract dimension to his work.
Chris’ journey into photography began in 1985, inspired by the awe-inspiring scenery of Fiordland, New Zealand, where he worked as a guide on the iconic Milford Track. Exploring the rugged mountain landscapes of New Zealand ignited a lifelong passion for photography that has only deepened through decades spent living and working in the mountains of New Zealand and Western Canada. His love for nature is particularly tied to mountain landscapes, which remain a central theme in his work.
When photographing landscapes, Chris is mindful of the Indigenous people whose connection to the land spans millennia. He reflects on the harmonious relationship the Ktunaxa and later the Secwepemc peoples had with their traditional territories. Growing up in Aotearoa New Zealand, Chris was inspired by the Māori Tangata Whenua (“people of the land”) and their concepts of Kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and tiaki (care and protection). Chris’s logo features the Māori Koru, symbolizing new beginnings, growth, and harmony with nature. For him, it evokes light entering a lens, reflecting his deep appreciation for the natural world that shapes his photography.
At the heart of Chris’ photography is the belief that it is not about him but about the beauty he encounters in the world. He sees himself as a messenger with a mission to convey that beauty as authentically and powerfully as possible, striving to capture iconic and timeless scenes that resonate emotionally with people who enjoy his photographs.
Chris’ work is driven by a love for nature, a passion for creative expression, a spirit of adventure, and a commitment to conservation. Through his lens, he not only preserves fleeting moments of natural beauty but also reminds viewers of the importance of protecting these extraordinary landscapes for future generations.
Ktunaxa & Secwepemc Territory
Chris is grateful to live, work, and recreate on the shared, traditional, and unceded territory of the Ktunaxa and Secwepemc First Nations. When he photographs the beautiful and timeless landscapes of the Kootenay region and the Canadian Rockies, he is mindful of the countless generations of Indigenous people who have lived in these mountains for over 10,000 years and can't help but imagine what this land looked like back then, what they saw, and how they interacted with it. So many many stories, all born from and held in the land......
